Stewarding God's created world is a biblical mandate. Think of the parable of the talents, in which a master returns "after a long time" to settle accounts with his servants. The master's question to each servant is, effectively, "What did you do with what I gave you?" When a servant gives evidence of faithfulness, the master responds with praise and commendation; the opposite response is true for the servant who fails to demonstrate his faithfulness with what he was given (see Matthew 25).

Any worthwhile conversation about creation degradation and stewardship must go beyond the debate about climate change and consider what Jesus said were the great commandments: loving God and loving others. We must admit that our love for God is deficient when we degrade his creation, and our love for our neighbors--both those who live near us and those who live across the ocean--is deficient when we hinder their ability to survive, whether by our negative action or our neutral inaction.
