In recent years, HIV and AIDS have received greater media attention. Thankfully, many gains have been made because of increased awareness, education, behavioral change, advances in and greater access to antiretroviral medication, and more funding from wealthy countries. Nevertheless, tens of millions of people still suffer from this horrible disease. Many of those affected are children, and have been infected through no fault of their own.

The devastating impact of HIV / AIDS is wider than just the person who is sick. What happens to a young child when one or both parents die because of AIDS and the orphan must become the head of his or her household? What about the impact on a family who has lost two children to AIDS already, while their third grows sicker every day? What happens in countries where economies may collapse because of the vast numbers affected?
